to San Diego.
The cast was announced today for the (possible) pre-Broadway run of The Wiz and I was pleasantly surprised. There had been some grumblings of a bunch of white folks (including Shoshana Bean
and Mary Testa)
in the cast, but those rumors proved to be untrue.
Reports indicate that the Des McAnuff directed cast will include Wayne Brady as the Scarecrow (and a middle-aged one at that!)
and David Alan Grier as the Wiz.
Nikki M. James as Dorothy
(she has a pretty voice, but she ain't no Stephanie Mills),
Tituss Burgess as the Lion,
Michael Benjamin Washington as the Tinman,
E. Faye Butler as (a really, really pretty) Evillene,
Orville Mendoza (who is Filipino, but that is close enough to Black) as Uncle Henry,
Valarie Pettiford (I love her!) as Glinda and Aunt Em
and Heather Lee (one white girl did slide on through) as Addaperle.
Courtney Corey, Mark Emerson, Dionne D. Figgins, Demond Green, Albert Guerzon, Dominique Kelley, Ron Kellum, Alan Mingo, Anisha Nagarajan, NRaca, Karine Plantadit, Keiana Richard, Liz Ramos and Marcos Santana are featured in the ensemble and cutie-pie Sergio Trujillo will serve as the choreographer.
In spite of some of this dubious casting, I'm really excited about this! Next to Dreamgirls, The Wiz is my favorish show! The stage version
is totally different from the movie
and, despite my love for Diana and Lena, is a whole lot better. They had better not mess this up!
